Pic of the Week (August 29, 2014): NW694 Loon Close-Up

"I have been intrigued by loons for many, many years. My license plate was even "Loon 1" for awhile! And I absolutely am entranced by this photo. I mean, look at the water droplets, the bubbles on his back, the feather detail and the muted colors are incredible. "

Pic of the Week: Hummingbird Dance

Hummingbird Dance ©Jim Brandenburg

"How delicate, the world's tiniest bird that can flash its bright colors, as well as hide them if needed. The bright radiant color on humming birds comes from iridescent coloring like on a soap bubble or prism. There it is, holding its body perfectly still while wings are beating 70–200 times per second. They are the only birds that can fly both forward and backwards, hover in mid-air, fly sideways and even upside down. This lovely image is captured with a ghostly reflective background."

Pic of the Week: Cape Buffalo and Glossy Starling

"If this isn't life!"

~ Milli
Brandenburg Gallery

Notes on Cape Buffalo and Glossy Starling from Jim Brandenburg:

"I was on assignment in Kenya for National Geographic Magazine when I happened upon this scene. My story was Rhinos but this moment electrified me. I still remember the feeling, a rare moment in my photographic career, when many compelling elements converged. The delicate rain fell upon a colorful Glossy Starling as it sat nonchalantly in a thorn tree in the foreground of one of Africa's most dangerous animals. The Cape Buffalo kills more people each year than lions - no gentle cow. With an unpredictable mood they can charge quickly with deadly power. As Milli's comment says, life's forces residing in one moment.
Delicate appearances can have ominous backdrops...
This image rarely gets chosen by editors but
remains one of my personal favorites."

Introducing: Pic of the Week

"You were only waiting for this moment to arise..."

"This photo is my top favorite of Jim's.  When spring finally arrives, and it hasn't yet, imagine the joy of happening upon this secret nest,
seeing the promise of fragile, new life."

Seasonal Collector's Print #26 ~ Blue Jay Battle

"Through the years I've noticed that Blue Jays often have a mixed reputation among the casual birders that have been watching the comings and goings at their backyard feeders. The dominant and aggressive ways of this showy member of our colorful year-round resident are not easily missed. We like to attach human qualities to animals - behaviorists call it Anthropomorphism. I believe nature has its own mysterious ways of working things out."  - Jim Brandenburg

The Jim Brandenburg Collectors Series features four seasonal prints a year. Each season, we will feature a new image that has never been printed, and will be available only at the Brandenburg Gallery. Seasonal Collector's Print #25 ~ My Loon Family

"With hope and some anxiety, I imagine our loons encountering the oil spill in the Gulf this fall when they migrate to their wintering grounds.   Immature loons will stay there a couple years before coming back to Minnesota.  But loons are resilient and tough birds. In fact, of all the birds, they are our oldest, having looked similar to these 70 million years ago when they swam amongst the last dinosaurs.   It is conceivable that these same loons have been nesting in my back yard as long as I have been here in the north woods - 30 years.  In that time, we have had a surprisingly low rate of success of loon babies reaching maturity because of gulls and ravens preying on the eggs.  Unfortunately, the loons start nesting around fishing opener in this part of the north woods. The fishermen are usually unaware of the nest as they focus on their fishing.  I’ve seen loons get scared off their nest for several hours. Gulls and ravens watch for this, and prey upon the eggs while the loon is gone.

I've become emotionally attached to these creatures, and every time I walk back to my lake I hold my breath in hopes that they have survived since I last saw them.  Most years the nesting is in vain. Unfortunately, one of the baby loons in this photograph has now disappeared, possibly from a bald eagle.  A few years ago I watched a bald eagle take a young loon, much to the despair of the adults.    We hope to see these amazing creatures back in the years to come. With their incredible ability to survive 70 million years, let’s hope they are able to outlive modern man’s clumsy foibles.”

The First Week of Summer at Ravenwood

The first hour of the first day of summer (above).

Jim's first few days of summer have been very exciting.
Yesterday, he discovered these newly hatched Common Loon chicks at Ravenwood (below).

"In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day. No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them."  -- Aldo Leopold

Collectors Print #19 - Trumpeter Swan on New Year's Eve

"Minnesota leads the nation in reintroducing the Trumpeter Swan after the North American population fell to dangerously low numbers and was on the verge of extinction. The Trumpeter Swan is the largest waterfowl species native to North America with a wingspan of over 7 feet. I photographed this Trumpeter Swan on the Mississippi River in -30˙F on New Years Eve 2008."
